Opinions.

This is technically not a book related post, but I’m going to try to make it one. Also, it’s my blog, so if I want to deviate from the subject of books for a short minute, then I suppose I can.

We seem to have forgotten that there is a vast difference between an “opinion” and a “fact”. We live in a world where the phrase, “Well, that’s your opinion,” is constantly used to disagree with something that is factually correct. It is not my opinion that climate change is real or that the earth is round or that blueberries are, in fact, blue. Those are all facts.

An opinion is when I say “I like Emma better than Pride and Prejudice,” or “Isaac Asimov is one of the best sci-fi writers of all time,” (see, books!). Those can be disagreed with. You can say that you personally like Pride and Prejudice more than Emma, or that you think Isaac Asimov sucks. There’s no factual evidence I can use to disprove you, they’re just opinions.

You cannot use an opinion to negate a fact. A fact is true. It is provable with more than just “I think” as your evidence. Disagreeing with a fact does not then make the fact untrue, it makes you incorrect. There is no opinion that is stronger than a fact, and I’m extremely tired of tolerating “opinions” that are clearly and factually incorrect. Maybe if we were a little less accepting of stupidity, we wouldn’t be having as many issues as we currently are.
